I’m continuing my preparations for my vacation trip.
I’ll be taking my Yaesu FT-710 and the Xiegu G90 with me. If possible I plan to bring the Yaesu along for my trekking or bike trips. Of course, that means a heavier backpack – but that’s just the way it is.
While the G90 is a very compact radio and easy to fit into a backpack, the FT-710 (even though it’s not a huge radio) requires a bit more space. Another important consideration is protecting the radio during transport. For the FT-710, I bought a special case that I use when carrying the transceiver in the car. It’s also surrounded by soft protective foam inside – works perfectly. The outer size of the case is (in centimeters): 44,5x34x17. There is anough space to store the microphone, paddle etc. inside.
Unfortunately, this case is too big to fit into a backpack and also too heavy – I’m talking about a trekking backpack around 40 liters in capacity.
Recently, while going through some old stuff in my home storage, I found a plastic case that used to hold a drill. Initial measurements showed it should work. The ourter size is (in centimiters): 34x19x11.
I cut out the protruding plastic bits meant for holding the drill. I also had to trim the outline of the case a bit but the end result is satisfying. True, a small part of the radio is visible on the outside, but for the most part, it’s well protected. The front panel and the rear panel are both secured. Of course I also added some protective foam inside.
This case can now actually fit into a backpack and I can transport the radio without worrying about it getting accidentally bumped or something shifting inside the backpack and damaging a knob or the display. The case doesn’t close very securely, so I’ll also strap it around with a securing belt to prevent it from accidentally opening during transport.
